Ranky Tanky
Spring 2010 MusicAll four members sing and arrange harmonies deeply rooted in the gospel traditions. Fiddler/singer Rani Arbo brings a remarkably expressive alto to the group, while Andrew Kinsey drives the rhythm with his upright bass and intricate banjo and ukelele playing. Anand Nayak is the band's star guitar master, equally adept at jazz as he is at bluegrass, and Scott Kessel plays what he has dubbed the Drumship Enterprise; a recycled drum kit comprised of a cardboard box, cat food tins, a Danish butter cookie tin, and a suitcase. The song selection is handpicked from some of the world's best writers and songsmiths such as The Meters' rousing zoo song "They All Ask'd For You," a high spirited, horn infused, rendition of Cat Stevens' "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out," a gospel inspired version of John Gorka's wonderful ode to trees in "Branching Out," and even a high, lonesome rendition of Tom Petty's "Wildflowers." In between, there are fantastic originals such as the silly, short (35 seconds) "Where Did You Get That Hat," the sweet and magical pony song "Tinny," the silly "Kind Kangaroo," and the crazy jaw harp driven "Something in Scott's Throat," followed by Billy Jonas' classic animal pun song "Bear to the Right." Forget the kids, you'll want this album for yourself. The fact that your children will absolutely love it, will be the icing on an already delicious cake.
